It is difficult to grow up amongst so much American history and not have a deep love and respect, both for the State of Maryland and the United States of America.  My ancestors came from the deep South to Washington, D.C. after slavery was abolished, seeking better economic opportunities for themselves and access to better hospitals for their families.  Moving out of the "projects," my grandparents bought and paid for their own home in the city.  As crime in DC increased and public schools got worse, my parents moved into the suburbs of Prince George's County. Surrounded by reminders of the American Revolution, the War of 1812, & the War Between the States, I attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, a former port of the African Slave Trade, but also a place that served as the Capitol of the United States before D.C. was carved out of our state.  In all this, I learned that an American's loyalty is to the Constitution, and even though we may at times disagree on what it means, we should never fail to be guided by it as we continue in our insistence not to be ruled by kings or empires, but to rule ourselves in our unfinished and ongoing quest for self-government.
