"I do not hesitate to say, that those who call themselves Abolitionists should at once effectually withdraw their support, both in person and property, from the government...and not wait till they constitute a majority of one, before they suffer the right to prevail through them. I think that it is enough if they have God on their side, without waiting for that other one. Moreover, any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one already." -- Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience

"AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER?"

This was an Abolitionist slogan, dating back to 1787, used in anti-slavery campaigns to combat the myth that had been planted in the minds of Americans that Blacks preferred servitude and were incapable of governing themselves.  This slogan showed that Blacks had the same emotions, the same mortality, and the same needs as all men.  And if they were men, did they not deserve the same rights?  The same freedoms?  Did they not also possess immortal souls that would be judged in the final day?  Were they not BROTHERS before the LORD?  Today, the descendants of slaves as well as Blacks throughout the world are known for their ardent faith and belief in God.  This belief in a common humanity and a common faith showed many that Blacks also deserved the promise of American Liberty.  Today, freedom is threatened again as a select few seek to rule over other men, to mock, ridicule and deny the existence of God, and to dictate to us how we will live our lives.  Our Constitution is our shield against this despotism and is our path to freedom, just as the Constitution ended slavery with the 13th Amendment.

"Majorities do not decide what is right or wrong; your conscience does. So why should a citizen surrender his or her conscience to a legislator? For we must NEVER EVER kneel down before the tyranny of a majority!" -- Samantha Booke, The Great Debaters

LET'S MAKE HISTORY!

We have come to the point in the history of America where we must make a choice:  Are we to be a republic of free and independent States?  Or are we to become a singular, consolidated government, where the sovereignty of the states is subjugated to will of the majority?  Are we to have a government based on FREEDOM?  Or, as Abraham Lincoln pondered more than 150 years ago, will we attempt to continue as "house divided against itself?"  The people of America must decide if they are truly ready for freedom and independence.  We must decide if we are ready for self-government.  For as Lincoln also said, "when the white man governs himself, that is self-government; but when he governs himself and also governs another man, that is more than self-government — that is despotism."  If we are ready for self-government, then we should embrace our Constitution, and the blessings of Liberty that our founders passed on to us.  And we must elect people to office who will place Liberty first among virtues, for as Patrick Henry said, "Liberty should be the direct end of your government."  Those of us who believe in Liberty know that it has never come easily, nor is freedom "more than a generation away from extinction."  But if you are willing to join me and fight beside me, we can still make this the land of the FREE if we are willing to also be the home of the BRAVE.  We must be willing to "fight for freedom" for ourselves, for our fellow man, and for our children.

"The only real unemployment relief is to give a man job. But to do that, you have to give the economy life, not tax it to death!" -- Otheree Hubbard, Paul Quinn College, The Great Debaters

WHERE ARE THE JOBS?

My initial challenge to Senator Cardin at the Healthcare Town Hall (excluded from the newscast) was over an issue of jobs.  I had sought to discover what my Senator could do to help me keep my job.  But having lost it and taking a significantly lower-paying job, I had to make some tough choices about what expenses I would cut.  After paying for my rent, my transportation, and taking care of my family, I saw Health Insurance as a luxury and decided to cut that out of my budget.  But Senator Cardin did not care.  He decided it was right to FINE me for not buying into the government plan.  Much of this debate would have been unnecessary if, since Senator Cardin's election in 2006, the economy had not gone sour or the government was an effective vehicle for creating jobs.  $787 billion in stimulus later, plus several taxpayer-funded bailouts for banks, auto companies, and other big businesses have not seen the job market improve.  In fact, things have gotten devastatingly worse.  What are American citizens supposed to do when their elected officials are not willing to uphold their most fundamental rights, listen to their grievances, or respond to their basic cries for an opportunity for employment?  Unlike other candidates in this race, I am not a multi-millionaire and cannot afford to quit my job to make a stand for my rights and the rights of my fellow Americans; nor am I a career politician who can rely on the American taxpayer to pay my bills.  I depend on a job to provide for myself and my family.  For the past six years, Senator Cardin has not delivered in this department, and until we elect someone who cares about America's workers, we will not see our economy improve.
